Captivating Not Captive
Play is at work all the
time in beauty. Play and beauty are both spontaneous, and that instant
truthfulness captivates our fantasies and our willingness to be those
fantasies. Playing obscures the cut in reality between what may be both real
and not real. In fashion photography we take our fantasies for real, we make
believe because the resemblance to our fantasy obscures our reality-testing.
The impulse to obscure that which touches us but is incomprehensible – the
fullness of life that effects us – is a perpetual obstacle. Captivating Not Captive intervenes to
return one towards courage.
